Mid-Century Modern Magic

A collection of our favourite refinished mid-century pieces

24 February - Refinished Furniture

There's something special about the sleek lines and real wood of mid-century design. It’s almost like it never goes out of style.

Walnut + Black

This classic combo will always have a special place in our hearts. Although it’s a simple pairing, the sculptured black handles of this dresser provide a contrasting line to the walnut wood, truly letting it shine.

Norwegian Teak

Another testament to the unique shapes of mid-century design is this 1950s folding ellipse table by Bendt Winge for Kleppes Møbelfabrik.

This table gets its name “Ellipse” from the uniquely shaped solid teak legs. Paired with folding teak table leaves, this unique piece is perfect for smaller spaces. It’s also just a really cool piece to look at and admire.

Light Wood (Birch/Maple)

Although a little less common, lighter-toned woods (e.g., birch or maple) were also used in mid-century designs. This desk in particular was manufactured from solid birch slabs by Canadian company Vilas Furniture.

We opted to use a white-tinted hardwax oil to maintain the glow of light wood without yellowing, while still providing enough protection for everyday use. We love the angled drawer fronts of this desk, the tapered legs, and the open shelf—perfect for displaying books while also offering plenty of storage to stash away the less aesthetically pleasing office essentials.

Curved Walnut

You bet that we saved the best for last. This curved walnut dresser was one of our favorites! We love the slight curved lip of the drawers, which provides plenty of space to grab and open them effortlessly. We also appreciate the continuous walnut wood grain that flows up and down through the drawer fronts. It’s the small details that often make the biggest difference when it comes to furniture.
